The Syrian Gazelle Boy was the character of a fable. He represented Syria prior to the tumultuous World Wars and the devastation of western colonialism. He is Syria, he is the land all Syrians love, their homeland, his power is drawn from the elements of the Syrian landscape, of its people. He is the spirit of their freedom, scrappy, innocent. His innocence escapes the imperialists, escapes their understanding. He is a conjuring of humanity, beautiful, young, and free. In light of the current unrest in Syria, I felt touched by this fable.
