Those crazy cats at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics are at it again!
Banana Structures Bring the Synchrotron and the Tokamak Together.
That’s just you and the bananas, melded together.
The Tokamak is like a smooth ellipsoid donut. the inside of an apple cored with metal. A stellarator is a twisted donut/apple shape, like someone sat on it. The designs confine hot plasma, but the added banana structures within the core bring about the possibility for sustained plasma confinement and fusion power. The stellerator used the knotty fields to build and sustain confinement. The tokamak could not stay lit.
Now that you know, I hope your day is bright and full of decorative gelatins and whatnot. Putting those bananas in there will bridge the gap between the two designs. It’s not quite a cruller. A cruller looks like a donut ring covered in a row of inclined bananas wrapped around its equator. This new design basically normalizes the confinement mean square distance from the core of the plasma, uses less intervals. It is a simplified, upright truncated banana cruller. That’s good. There’s a DIY spectrometer project available to help you dip a toe in spectrometry.
Obligatory children’s rhyme about apples and bananas.

Think of the plasma as a sound shaped by the acoustics of your vocal cords and the shape of your mouth, force of breath, type of gas moving.
