Bonus Disgusting Recipe: No Good MASA TALAN BERAS WITH MASA
Quick Take: Steaming these in individual 8 Oz. cups took the better part of an hour. Taste like the innards of an overflow pipe in a cereal factory. Make and regret.
Listening to sounds of a nearby cat fight as I write this. Horrible. Makes my indoor kitties growl and pace the windowsills.
The recipe called for me to boil off some water and coconut milk in different pans, different quantities, cool them, then incorporate some mixes and nuked palm sugar water into the cooling milks.
I didn’t like how loose and liquid my poorly reduced stuff was looking, so I tightened it up with some fresh masa, corn flour. Instead of palm sugar, I used light brown. The two changes probably altered the dish, but I don’t ever see this stuff flying off the shelf anyways.
Three minutes after I uncorked this vegan flan from the refrigerator, the layers separated. The top layer tastes like creamy Play-Doh. The lower layer tastes like sweet Play-Doh. The upper layer has the consistency of a cold pecan pie. The lower layer is like a biscuit. I tried making a “Krabby Patty” version, but the patty remained liquid in the middle and burst like a grape when I cut it. Tastes boo. This one sat and turned more to custard after two days in the ‘fridge. My son loved it. He probably never decided to taste Play-Doh. Man’s got to know his limitations. That means I am leaving the world a better place than when I found it.
Like I have palm sugar laying around, right. I put lite brown in it. The masa gave it a really weird flavor. I might like it in a decade. Right in the trash. I still have a version with cinnamon in the somewhat runny jelly biscuit layer. I might throw it in the river and document its travel North on the Mon to determine average velocity, then work on an unhinged essay about spinors, linear algebra, banana bread, and remote Oceana culture, as is the way of my people. I will use any photos from the Huckleberry Jelly Flan River Run episode to spice up my segues. I hypothesize the lower layer will disintegrate and the upper portion will last a couple of miles, then melt away, based on the talan beras data I have been getting. Lite brown sugar.
